What Azelaic Acid Did To My Skin

I’ve been trying several products to help me cure my adult acne and it seems I have found a winner. After a month of use, I’m here to tell you what azelaic acid did to my skin.
Before we get into the many pros I experienced allow me to explain what azelaic acid is and how I used it.

What is azelaic acid?
According to Healthline,
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in grains such as barley, wheat, and rye. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it effective in the treatment of skin conditions like acne and rosacea. The acid can prevent future outbreaks and clean bacteria from your pores that causes acne.

The azelaic acid I chose to use is the azelaic acid suspension 10% from The Ordinary. It was affordably priced at US $7.90 from the Deciem website.
How did I use it?
Since I purchased a suspension formula the azelaic acid was the last thing I added to my skin. Please note that I use aloe vera gel as my moisturizer of choice. Therefore, it is applied before the acid.
My evening skincare application order goes like this:
- Cleanser
- Serum
- Gels (medication & moisturizer)
- Suspension cream
Now I don’t apply the acid to my face is every day. Because I’m also on acne medication I use it about 3- 4 times a week at night.

What did it do to my skin?
After one night of use, my face was noticeably softer. So I continued to use it approximately 3 times a week along with my prescribed adapalene gel and these were my results:
- fewer cystic breakouts
- no irritation
- no inflammation
- brighter, more even skin
To sum up, I’ve been having a satisfying experience with this product from The Ordinary. With no side effects to date, I would recommend this product to any skincare beginner. High effectiveness with low risk? What’s not to love.
As you can tell, I’m in love with azelaic acid, it’s now one of my favourites. In the comments below let me know what your current favourite skincare product is.
