7 Essentials You Need For Your Natural Hair

So you just transitioned or big chopped and you’re realizing your natural hair is requiring a whole new level of care. Don’t you worry. I created this list just for you. Here are the 7 essentials you need for your natural hair journey.
Disclaimer: This isn’t a rule book to tell you what you can and can’t do to your hair. This list is for my beginner naturals with no idea where to start with their hair care routine. Once you get a hang of things feel free to tweak it to suit your needs.

What you’ll need
1. Shampoo
Firstly there is shampoo. There are two main types of shampoos you’ll need; sulfate-free & clarifying shampoo. Personally I only use the sulfate-free shampoo but it’s also good to have a clarifying shampoo that can better tackle heavy styling products. Gels, waxes and shea butter may require a clarifying shampoo.
On the other hand, sulfate-free shampoos are gently cleansing and the lack of sulfates means it won’t strip your hair of its natural oils.
Give them both a try and see which one works best for you.

I sorted this list in the order of a typical wash day so let’s move on to conditioner.
2. Deep conditioner
Newly natural hair can be quite dry and that’s where deep conditioning comes in. This step treats your hair’s needs. Similarly to shampoos, for deep conditioners, there are two options.
Protein deep conditioners are for strengthening fragile or limp hair. Protein deep conditioners reinforce the hair’s bonds and keeps your hair stronger longer.
Moisturizing deep conditioners focus on hydrating and softening the hair. In other words, if you struggle with dry hair a moisturizing deep conditioner can transform your dry tresses into luscious, shiny locks.

3. Leave-in conditioner
Some naturals may skip this step but its absolutely essential in maintaining moisturized hair. After you’ve deep conditioned and rinsed it away apply your leave-in conditioner to replace the moisture lost. this is especially key if your styler of choice will be a gel. gels are extremely drying to the hair so before applying gel using a leave-in conditioner will provide a well-moisturized base for the gel.
4. Scalp Oil
Nourishing the scalp continues with this step. Nobody wants a flaky scalp so after you’ve shampooed the oils from your scalp replace it with an oil blend of your choosing.
5. Styler
There are so many natural stylers to choose from now. Curling creams, gels, custards, styling foam and the list goes on. To begin I suggest starting with a just a moisturizing cream and gel. For twist outs, I’d recommend a moisturizing cream or gel. I’ll let you decide on what brand you prefer.
6. Detangling Tool
A wide toothed comb is every naturals best friend. Get a sturdy plastic one and you’re all set.
7. Satin Bonnet/ Silk Scarf or Pillowcase
When you’re a natural sleeping on a cotton pillowcase with protecting our hair is a no-no. You don’t want to wake up to an unintended frizzy hairstyle. Protect your hair by investing in a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase. Not only does it protect your hair from becoming frizzy but it also can prevent split ends and dry hair.
To sum up, natural hair care can be as simple as you’d like with these 7 essentials. Remember, this list is not exhaustive, you’ll need to experiment with several products before you find your perfect match. Make it fun!
Good luck on your journey!
