How To Stay Within Budget This Christmas

2020 has been a rough year. But I’m still trying to make this Christmas as cheerful as possible for myself and loved ones. When it comes to being financially responsible it’s all year round practice so the holiday season is no different. In this post I’ll be sharing my top tips to stay within budget this Christmas.

Buy fewer decorations
Beautiful décor is a sight for sore eyes. It’s a source of cheer for many but if you’re working with a tighter budget this year cut down on the décor shopping. Instead, you can try to DIY some of your decorations. Or maybe you can brush off older decorations and reuse them.
However, if you must buy Christmas decorations, try buying the thing that gives you the most joy and skip the rest.
Make a holiday spend budget
To be on budget, you need to have a budget.
Identify an amount you can spend (from your savings/salary) this holiday without negatively impacting yourself. Then consider all the things you typically spend on during the holidays. Write them down and write the cost next to it. Evaluate your list then cross out anything you can do without. Calculate the total cost of what’s left and if it falls within your budget you’re good to go. If no keep eliminating things until your total spend is within budget.
Unsubscribe from email notifications
I get a million notifications telling me about the latest sale or discount everyone has and luckily my will is strong enough to ignore them. But if you’re not as strong try unsubscribing for the holiday period to stay focused. Some of these ads are really enticing to me too, so do what you must to stay on track.
Hide your money away
Out of sight, out of mind right? Tuck your money into an account that is not used for your daily expenditure. Set it there and forget about it.
Get an accountability partner
If you and your friend are on this journey to stay on budget include them in plans to keep it that way. That way you can rely on each other for daily expense check-ins and you can cry to them when the temptation is too strong. They can also be the person to bounce ideas off of when you are thinking of making a purchase.
I hope these tips help! Happy saving and happy holidays!
