My 2020 Skincare Favourites For WOC

Last year I tried a lot of new products. Yep, I put some of that extra cash from working from home to work and took my self-care to the next level. I explored makeup, hair care and even body care. I’m happy to say many of the products were hits. So I’ve compiled a list of my 2020 skincare favourites for women of colour.

Over the next few days I’ll be sharing my favourite products from each category; skincare & hair care.

Acne Skincare Favourites

As you know my skin took me for a trip this year and though it was painful journey I’m glad for some of the products I’ve come to know and love.

First on the list are my favourite products from The Ordinary for hyyperpigmentation.

  • Azelaic acid suspension 10%
  • Alpha arbutin 2% +HA

These two items have been nothing but good to me. I’ve shared how I’ve felt about them in previous posts last year. They’re that good.

Dry Skincare

I have dry skin but for some reason, I had almost forgotten about it. Keeping my skin moisturized was always a priority so I almost never experienced the symptoms. Tight, flaky skin did not live here until 2020. My moisture regimen lapsed because I was home. After all, no one would see my ashy elbows except me. That was a big mistake.

African Shea Butter

Shea Butter

My skin was dry and in dire need of surfactant moisture. To alleviate the dryness I resumed my daily moisturizing routine and added Shea butter as a new twist.

One of my very first blog posts was a rave about shea butter for my hair. But it wasn’t until 2020 that I had begun to use it for large areas of my body. The thick, creaminess was exactly what my skin needed. Flaky skin became smooth and I was back to normal.

Palmer’s Moisturizing Body Oil

Body Oil

Shea butter is perfect for cooler weather due to its thickness. However, for warmer months, I prefer supplementing my body lotion with a light-weight body oil. Palmer’s body oil served me well in sealing in the moisture applied to my skin. The Palmer’s oil also promises to add moisture to your skin on its own as well.

Acne Cleansers

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser

I wanted to replace my Clean & Clear Morning Burst cleanser with something gentler and better for my skin. A few months ago I started researching viable options. While there’s an incredible list of options I wanted something affordable. After much research I found Vanicream.

After a few months and it’s become my go to morning cleanser.

It leaves my skin clean and soft.

To continue to treat my acne I like to use a medicated cleanser at night to unclog my pores and this cream cleanser does exactly that.

Makeup

Maybelline Superstay Foundation

I was battling acne but I wanted to cover up my acne scars so I bought my first bottle of full coverage foundation in 2020. While I wasn’t new to makeup it was my first rodeo with full coverage foundation and I needed some guidance. So after watching countless YouTube videos I learnt how to cover up my hyperpigmentation with the Maybelline Superstay foundation.

Although Maybelline is a popular brand, I fell in love because its foundations are non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores. That is especially crucial to anyone with acne-prone skin. Being able to wear makeup to cover your blemishes without fear of worsened acne is a blessing.

Those were my favourite skincare products of 2020. Let me know if you’ve used any of these products and what were your thoughts.
