Best Natural Hair Products of 2020

Last week we discussed skincare products that revolutionized my skin in 2020. This week we’re talking about natural hair. I’ll be highlighting the best natural hair products I found in 2020 for my type 4 hair.

The natural hair products that worked best for me last year were the ones I had least expectations of.

Starting the list is my favourite hair product of the year.

Ettenio’s Free At Last Leave- in Conditioner

I have fallen in love. This is the leave-in conditioner I’ve been waiting for my whole life. It’s absolutely what I needed but didn’t know I needed. Ettenio’s free at last leave-in conditioner is the best leave-in conditioner I’ve used for the following reasons:

  • softness,
  • hydration,
  • moisture,
  • curl definition plus it’s a great base for gel.

It’s formulated with hair strengthening ingredients like panthenol and broccoli seed oil ( which I’ve never seen listed in a product before). This leave-in also promised to enable easier detangling and I can support that claim. After all its chock full of slippery ingredients like aloe vera, slippery elm and even marshmallow extract. Overall I’ve had the best experience with this product as a nourishing, detangling leave in. Occasionally I like to use it instead of my regular moisturizer for moisture without the build-up.

Crème of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo

My holy grail natural hair care product! It both cleanses and moisturizes at the same time. What’s even better is that it works well most of the products I’ve tried in my natural hair journey. I can always count on it and will continue to use for the foreseeable future.

A sulfate free shampoo is a dime a dozen these days but what makes his special is it’s consistent effectiveness. No matter what’s going on on my hair I can always count on it to help me hit the reset button.

Let me let you in on a little secret superpower this shampoo has. On a good week where my hair didn’t manage to get too tangled, I can use the Creme of Nature shampoo to detangle my hair. or if you don’t want to risk it, this shampoo is actually slippery enough to finger detangle your hair before using your comb/brush.

Taliah Waajid Green Apple & Aloe Curl Definer

The definer of all definers. Taliah worked her magic with this curl definer. I used this styler for my wedding day and there was not an ounce of regret in sight. I had a flawless braid out from root to ends. Curls unwavering despite the heat and humidity. This curl definer can guarantee me a great braid-out every single time and deliver on the promise..

My only issue with this styler is its inability to deliver the same results from a twist-out. Whenever I’d try a twist-out the results would be limp and frizzy. Nevertheless, I know if I ever want a bomb braid-out this product will not fail me. Actually, I think I could even create a fluffy wash and go using just this product.

Taliah Waajid’s creamy yet custard looking product made its way into my heart along with her other products.

Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream

Did someone say one product wash and go. My first wash and go I was proud of was done with this product. This was the only product I used and I was smitten. the curl definition was there and though my roots did not stay perfectly defined my hair soft all over and moisturized.

I’ve seen some people pair the curly curl cream with a gel to achieve a great wash and go and I’m thinking to give that a try this year. Follow me on Instagram to see how that goes.

Soft Touch Shine Hair Wax Aqua

As my hair grows longer I find myself wanting to keep it off my neck. Jamaica is hot and humid too. in place of braid outs and twist outs, I opt for a high puff or low bun and most recently a high bun. Normally to achieve these styles I’d use my handy eco styler gel but as a girl who wears a style for days at a time the gel build-up becomes unbearable sooner than later.

So I decided to give a hair wax a try and it turned out to be better than I anticipated. The pros were:

  • no build-up after days of use
  • only a small amount needed
  • leaves hair incredibly shiny

But there were a few cons too:

  • not a consistently long lasting hold ( some days were better than others)
  • did not pair well with gel

Despite the cons, the Soft Touch brand has a lot of waxes to choose from and I want to try another wax before I determine it a loss. Because I’d really like to be able to refresh my edges without gel.

Ettenio’s Creme De La Creme Moisturizer

Last year I was looking for a daily moisturizer because my hair was uncharacteristically dry between wash days. I was also looking to buy into a black-owned or locally made brand and I remembered that I always wanted to try out Ettenio. I did some research and made my purchase and just like the leave-in conditioner, I had no regrets.

Creme de la Creme is jam-packed with nourishing natural ingredients for the hair much like the leave-in conditioner. In fact, they share quite a few of the same ingredients. However, the moisturizer has a richer creamier consistency.

This moisturizer made my hair incredibly soft and I would recommend it for use in stretched natural hair styles. Think of it as a light, hydrating butter for your hair. There’s no build up with gentle use and airy, softness of the hair is what I needed.
