Natural Hair Styling Products I Can’t Live Without

I’ve been natural for 8 years- that time flew by- and if there’s anything I’ve learnt in that time is what natural hair styling products I would never choose to live without.
For newly natural or transitioning ladies and gents, this topic comes in quite handy. When I first started delving into the natural hair world, learning from others was a great help. I was quickly able to learn what my hair liked and disliked. Very soon after that, I was able to choose my own products from the comments reviewers would make about the product’s texture and thickness. I’m hoping to do the same for you as you read this.

How to choose the right natural hair styling products for you
Choosing the right natural hair styler for your hair is all about knowing your hair. Does your hair like thick products more than lightweight ones? Or does it feel heavy and limp after you apply heavy creams? To find out what kind of products you may like I’ve listed a few questions you can ask yourself to start.
Batch A
- Does your hair enjoy thick, heavy creams like shea butter?
- Do you experience hair frizz shortly after using light cream products?
- Is your hair more manageable when thick creams are applied?
Batch B
- Does your hair feel moisturized all day after using mousse as a styler?
- After washing, do your curls remain intact without product?
- Is your hair easily weighed down?
Answer Key
If you answered yes to all or most of the questions in Batch A your hair likes thick, creamy products. But don’t worry, you can still get away with styling with a mousse to achieve styles like a perm rod set every now and then.
On the other hand, if you answered yes to most or all of the questions in Batch B your hair enjoys lightweight hydration and it doesn’t need much to lock a curl into place.
Now you have an idea of what your hair likes, you can dig a little deeper and research your hair’s porosity. But simply put porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. There are three main categories for porosity:
- Low porosity
- Medium porosity
- High porosity
For reference, my hair falls into the low porosity category. It has a hard time absorbing moisture but when it does it can stay moisturized for a long time. My hair is also very fond of thick moisturizing products.

My favourite natural hair styling products
Taliah Waajid Curl Definer
Heading the list is this godsend of a styler. This thick, gelatinous cream curl definer is the staple product behind my defined braid outs. It’s actually the product I used to style my hair on my wedding day!
When I think of this product I think of consistency in a jar. I can always expect great results. Every. Single. time.
Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream
Similar to the Curl Definer, the curly curl cream is another thick curl defining cream that works great on tightly coiled hair. It works wonders for my multi-textured hair (I have a mix of curls and waves). The curly curl cream is the only product I’ve ever used to successfully achieve a one product wash and go.
I’ve seen a number of YouTubers use this product in conjunction with a gel to achieve their wash and go. If the curly curl cream isn’t enough for your hair, consider giving that combo a try.
Ecostyler Gel
When it’s time to create a sleek style I opt for a gel. My gel of choice is ecostyler gel- controversial, I know. But it gets the job done and with hair as peculiar as mine when I found that this brand worked I stopped searching for others.
From this short list, you can tell I follow a very simple hair care routine. Despite its simplicity, I can assure you it’s been more than enough for me and it’s my secret to growing (and retaining) long, healthy natural hair.
