I pay myself first
One of the most valuable pieces of advice I’ve received is to always pay yourself first. This means setting aside a predetermined amount of money each month for savings, before any other expenses. If you’re salaried, make this the first payment that leaves your account. I follow the 50/30/20 budget rule: 50% for necessities, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and debt repayment. This simple framework helps me stay on track each month.

Set a savings goal
As my fifth-grade teacher wisely said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This mantra has guided every aspect of my life, especially my finances. Setting clear, achievable savings goals is crucial. Every year, I review my financial progress and adjust my goals accordingly. By breaking down my yearly savings target into manageable monthly amounts, I stay focused and motivated.

Make a budget monthly
Budgeting is essential for financial success. Each month, I allocate funds for savings, investments, insurance, and lifestyle expenses, including discretionary spending. This practice helps me understand where my money is going and ensures I can set aside funds for short-term goals. I also follow a 90/10 rule for unexpected windfalls: 90% goes into savings, and 10% is used to treat myself.
These three simple strategies have helped me create a sustainable and effective financial routine. While there are countless other tips out there, starting with these basics can set you on the path to financial security.
